Originally I thought that my fascination with biographies made me an absolute geek, in the most endearing sense of the word. During my research, I surprisingly found I was in good company. Many people, past and present, have enjoyed reading biographies. Some have actually spoken of its importance to society and history. Here are some quotes and notes that I’ve collected during my research. I hope you find them helpful as you begin YOUR story. If you have any interesting quotes or notes, please be sure to share them with other members via our guestbook.

Here are some of the biography-related Quotes that I discovered (courtesy of en.thinkexist.com):

  • “There was never yet an uninteresting life. Such a thing is an impossibility.” (Mark Twain)
  • “There is properly no history; only biography.” (Ralph Waldo Emerson)
  • “Biography is the only true history.” (Thomas Carlyle)
  • “Every life has a story.” (A&E Biography ad)
  • “Read no history: nothing but biography, for that is life without theory.” (Benjamin Disraeli)
  • “We are the hero of our own story.” (Mary McCarthy)
  • "Every great man nowadays has his disciples, and it is always Judas who writes the biography" (Oscar Wilde)
  • "No great man lives in vain. The history of the world is but the biography of great men." (Thomas Carlyle)
  • "Just how difficult it is to write biography can be reckoned by anybody who sits down and considers just how many people know the real truth about his or her love affairs." (Rebecca West)
  • "For one who reads, there is no limit to the number of lives that may be lived, for fiction, biography, and history offer an inexhaustible number of lives in many parts of the world, in all periods of time." (Louis L'Amour)
  • "Biography is: a system in which the contradictions of a human life are unified." (Jose Ortega y Gasset)

Here are some Notes for starting YOUR biography at biowriters.NET, courtesy of various writers:

  • Get in the habit of taking a notebook with you wherever you go. Jot down memories, favorite songs, etc. as you think of them.
  • Get in the habit of setting aside photos, mementos, etc. Mark them with dates and captions immediately if you think they’ll be part of your biography.
  • Start now. Don’t wait until you’re “older” or “have more to say”. You will be surprised how quickly you forget things that are important!
  • Go slowly. Take your time with our questionnaire. There’s no limit on the number of words you use, or how long it takes you to answer a question. Work on it until you’re happy with it or can’t add any more to it.
  • Don’t feel pressured. This is YOUR story and it will take time. Some days you just won’t be in the mood. Take a break when you need to, we’ll be here when you’re back in the mood.
  • Include all the little details! Don’t think of them as unimportant, because they’re often VERY important.
  • Do your best to get the timelines right. Think hard when citing the years of events. When your biowriters.NET author becomes involved in your project, she/he will want to put events into a historical context, so your recollection of years/months can become quite important.
